SESY.AI

Tech

SESY.AI, our semantic technology.

SESY.AI orders knowledge by meaning. It catalogues, translates, relates and answers, always citing its sources, on infrastructure we own and operate. Its services to businesses and institutions fund the libraries.

The circuit

  1. Services for businesses and institutions
  2. Income for the project
  3. New libraries and collections
  4. Open knowledge for every reader

Semantic

Meaning, not only words.

A semantic catalogue relates people, places, times, subjects and sources, so that a person or an AI finds the same record by what it means, in any language. It joins the tools of library science with the semantic web of Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Vocabularies

Natural language mapped to controlled vocabularies, so every way of asking reaches one record.

Sánchez González, José Fernando (2014), pp. 26–27

Authority

One identity for each person, place and work, "in an exact, unique and unambiguous way".

Sánchez González, José Fernando (2014), p. 28

Facets

Author, domain, territory, language, time and protocol: Ranganathan's faceted method, extended.

Linked data

Dublin Core, MARC 21, JSON-LD and schema.org: records that people and machines read alike.

How it works

From document to cited answer.

Every answer has a source; every record has provenance; every author is credited.

  1. Ingest

Documents, images, audio and data enter a collection.

  2. Transcription and OCR

As the Biblioteca Digital Bicentenario offered full-text search through character recognition.

  3. Metadata

AI proposes descriptions, subjects and facets.

  4. Human review

    A librarian verifies every record.

  5. Publication

    With protocol, licence and provenance.

  6. Answers with citations

Built on the catalogue, with the degree of certainty stated.

  7. Evaluation

Feedback and statistics for continuous improvement.

How SESY.AI funds the libraries

The engine is commercial. The libraries are open.

With the printing press the library began to democratize the book, and a true commerce of the book was born. SESY.AI follows that path: its services sustain the libraries, and commerce never enters a library.

Platforms we build with

The tools of the rising library.

Every technology is chosen "with caution and reflection" and must be flexible, accessible, usable, cost-effective, permanent and universal.

Own infrastructure

The keepers of knowledge own the house that holds it.

Made to measure

"Librarians began to produce their own systems, made to measure for their library needs, and in time became the professionals of these technologies."

Sánchez González, José Fernando (2014), p. 6

Secure by design

Privileges, real-time monitoring, authentication and access control, with independent databases so that one failure never stops the whole system.

Sánchez González, José Fernando (2014), sec. 3.1, p. 64

Open source first

The Bicentennial portal ran on 100% open-source software, adapted to the project and free of costly licences.

Sánchez González, José Fernando (2014), sec. 3.2, p. 70

Accessibility and privacy

For every person, with respect.

Web accessibility means "access for all, regardless of hardware, software, network infrastructure, language, culture, geographic location and abilities". NEO library.org targets WCAG 2.2 AA, with day and night modes, keyboard navigation and reduced motion. In 2010 the Bicentennial accessibility portal, made with CONADIS, was "an innovation at the federal level".

Visits are measured with Google Analytics 4 through Google Tag Manager, with Consent Mode v2: you decide whether analytics cookies are used. Web statistics are read as circulation statistics, to improve the library.

Contribute

Fund open knowledge for the new civilization.

Every contribution funds new libraries, open collections, translations, publications, field work and the infrastructure that keeps knowledge open and well ordered.

Two ways to build it

Contribute, or put SESY.AI to work.

NEO Library lives on two things only: contributions, and the work of SESY.AI. Both keep knowledge open and never for sale.
